I’m walking and talking this Saturday the 19th of October, tomorrow. The wonderful people at Overhear Poetry commissioned me to create a walk that would be a writerly response to my home city of Birmingham, so that’s what I’ve done.

This is not a facts and figures tour. It’s a creative look at a city you think you know, an interpretation of space, environment and architecture. But it’s not all me. I’ll be asking you to respond to points on the walk with snippets of poetic text in the style of Ian McMillan’s daily tweets.

Join me tomorrow at 10:30 outside Birmingham’s Roundhouse and delve into the heart of the city. There are a few tickets still available and you can get them here.

This is the final panel of my one page comic strip. As you can see, we have one angry squirrel.

When I get the chance, I’ll put the four together. It may not be until the weekend now as I’m busy over the next couple of days.

Now onto the writing!

I have an ending that I’m struggling with. Bloody dogs!

Squidger!

Here’s the third panel of my four-panel strip!

Who knows, I may even get to draw the final panel tomorrow.

Now for an hour of writing.

Yesterday, No.1 Daughter and I went to a marvellous workshop at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham. The workshop was run by Dr Nicola Streeten and Cath Tate as part of the Birmingham Literature Festival.

We looked at visual story telling through greetings cards and graphic novels. Cath talked us through her work and considerations for greetings cards and Nicola the same for graphic novels. The two hours flew by and incorporated some fun and challenging drawing activities. The culmination of this was all of us producing our own four panel stories. The daughter and I agreed to leave our work there as a backdrop for a talk today, so I’ve recreated/completed the first panel above here.

Here are some pics of the work we produced on the night.

Here’s a drawing done entirely in ink – no penciling out before hand. It’s not too bad considering. Knowing that whatever mark you make is permanent sure makes you look a lot more closely at what you drawing and the marks that you’re making.

Jude

It has a sepia tint because I shot it on my phone under the yellow lighting of the back bedroom. I used the Tombow flexible brushes for the majority of this – a black and a selection of greys. In fact, the only fine line work I did was on the hair and that was with the trusty Staedtler pens – a 0.5.

I quite like this, but I’m sure my son will hate it.

I’m finding Inktober a bit harder to be consistent with compared to Sketchtember. I’ve missed four days so far!

To Infinity…

Sticking with a sci-fi theme, here’s todays Inktober offering.

DANI_spacecraft

This was from a rough idea I doodled at work today. Once again, it’s black fibre-tip pen. I had a pathetic attempt at adding some background detail using Affinity Photo which, as you can tell, I don’t really know how to use – don’t tell my son, he’ll only take the piss.

I know that there are lots of great tutorials online that show you how to use Affinity, I just haven’t had the time to view them yet. Anyway, I need to stop drawing for now and get on with some work.

Well, Sketchtember is over; how did you get on? I think I did okay considering it was my first attempt. I only missed a few days due to illness, and most importantly I really enjoyed it. It brought back the childhood joy of mark making, something I feared four years of art college had destroyed.

So what now? Well, how about Inktober?

Inktober is another drawing challenge. The only difference from Sketchtember is that your drawings must be in ink. Here are the rules:

Inktober rules:

1) Make a drawing in ink (you can do a pencil under-drawing if you want).

2) Post it*

3) Hashtag it with #inktober and #inktober2018

4) Repeat

Note: you can do it daily, or go the half-marathon route and post every other day, or just do the 5K and post once a week. What ever you decide, just be consistent with it. Inktober is about growing and improving and forming positive habits, so the more you’re consistent the better.

That’s it! Now go make something beautiful.

*Post it on any social media account you want or just post it on your refrigerator. The point is to share your art with someone. 🙂

Check out the official Inktober site here.

The official site has lots of advice on what to draw, how to draw, post etc.

Have fun!

For some unknown reason, I always called this toy Space Monkey, but it quite clearly says Millenium Gorilla on his round badge – in reality, not in my sketch.

I’m feeling even rougher than when I last posted so ten minutes or so was all I could manage with this. It’s drawn with charcoal pencil from Tiger. They’re quite lovely to draw with, and you can get a decent black out of them. I’m not sure how well Millenium Gorilla gets on with those massive feet. It must be a bugger getting in and out of airlocks.

I had a stinking cold yesterday which has now transformed into a head full of sludge leaving me with the need to be curled up in a ball, not at work. Nothing was happening yesterday, so no sketch, but today I managed to scratch something out.

These were all done really quick and in pen. They’re not that accurate, but you get a feeling of their intense concentration.

Today was a wonderfully bright day, so I went for a lunchtime walk through Cannon Hill Park. This pen sketch captures the dramatic long shadows cast by the trees.
