Another quick one – I just don’t have the time at the moment. This is a view of the south end of Coniston in the Lake District. It’s all fibre tipped pen and is actually black on white paper. The image is a sepia brown due to me taking the pic on my phone for speed.

I did do a little tinkering in Affinity Photo to add the sepia splashes of cloud.

I’m hoping to get a bit of time at the weekend to do some longer drawing and some writing. That will hopefully be on Sunday once I’ve got my reading at Birmingham Literature Festival out of the way and finished working with my young writers group on the Saturday. I’ve set Saturday evening aside for watching crap with the family and drinking beer.

If you’re in Birmingham this Saturday morning (October 6th) come along to Birmingham REP, the Mezzanine, and hear some great stories from a bunch of wonderful writers. Hell, you could even buy some books.

Here’s a very quick n shabby sketch of my office. This was completed swiftly in pen during my brief lunch break.

I missed posting an image for yesterday so I’ll try and post something else later.

Sticking with a sci-fi theme, here’s todays Inktober offering.

DANI_spacecraft

This was from a rough idea I doodled at work today. Once again, it’s black fibre-tip pen. I had a pathetic attempt at adding some background detail using Affinity Photo which, as you can tell, I don’t really know how to use – don’t tell my son, he’ll only take the piss.

I know that there are lots of great tutorials online that show you how to use Affinity, I just haven’t had the time to view them yet. Anyway, I need to stop drawing for now and get on with some work.

Drawing, Drawing Challenge, Ink, Inking, Inktober, pen, Sketchtember

Well, Sketchtember is over; how did you get on? I think I did okay considering it was my first attempt. I only missed a few days due to illness, and most importantly I really enjoyed it. It brought back the childhood joy of mark making, something I feared four years of art college had destroyed.

So what now? Well, how about Inktober?

Inktober is another drawing challenge. The only difference from Sketchtember is that your drawings must be in ink. Here are the rules:

Inktober rules:

1) Make a drawing in ink (you can do a pencil under-drawing if you want).

2) Post it*

3) Hashtag it with #inktober and #inktober2018

4) Repeat

Note: you can do it daily, or go the half-marathon route and post every other day, or just do the 5K and post once a week. What ever you decide, just be consistent with it. Inktober is about growing and improving and forming positive habits, so the more you’re consistent the better.

That’s it! Now go make something beautiful.

*Post it on any social media account you want or just post it on your refrigerator. The point is to share your art with someone. 🙂

Check out the official Inktober site here.

The official site has lots of advice on what to draw, how to draw, post etc.

Have fun!

I had a stinking cold yesterday which has now transformed into a head full of sludge leaving me with the need to be curled up in a ball, not at work. Nothing was happening yesterday, so no sketch, but today I managed to scratch something out.

These were all done really quick and in pen. They’re not that accurate, but you get a feeling of their intense concentration.

Art, Drawing, pen, Self Portrait, sketching, Sketchtember

I have a bit of a hangover today after seeing the incredible The The in Birmingham last night. I’m blaming this for my lack of ideas for today’s sketch – yes, it’s another self-portrait!

My old art college buddy, Clive Russell, pointed out a few areas for development with the last self-portrait and suggested that I draw in pen with no rubbing out. That’s what I’ve done!

The result is okay. It looks a bit like me although the mouth is a bit small and the glasses aren’t quite right.

Drawing with pen means you have to focus on what you’re looking at and be confident in your mark making – something best left for hangover free days.

A pen and pencil sketch of a chap we brought back from Cumbria a couple of years ago. This skull is very interesting to draw – lots of fiddly curved bits of bone.

I think I’ll pick something less tricky tomorrow.
